4 Causes of Obesity in Children

Obesity in children has been a growing problem all over world. More and more children are at risk from high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and more, conditions that are usually associated with obesity. In order to protect our children from suffering from these conditions we must first understand the cause of obesity so as to identify and do the necessary actions to prevent them from experiencing these.

4 Causes of Obesity in Children

I've list here four (4) of the main causes of obesity.

Reason #1 Food Intake: One major cause of obesity is the food that children eat. Children today are more reliant in eating fast food, processed snacks and sugary drinks, foods that are high in fat and calories. These foods contribute greatly to children being obese so it's important to monitor and keep track of the kinds of food that our children eat.

Reason #2 Physical Inactivity: Another reason for obesity is the physical inactivity of children. TV, video games, computers, iPad's the internet and more are the new fads in many of the developed countries. Children and teenagers alike are relying more and more in these gadgets for entertainment and pastime instead of doing physical activities such as playing sports, exercising, etc.

Reason #3 Family Background: Children who live in a family of obese parents are more likely to be obese themselves. A family's eating patterns, lifestyle and exercise habits have a major influence on whether a child maintains a healthy lifestyle or not. Obese parents might not have too much concern on the weight of their children thus are less likely to monitor them.

Reason#4 Genetics: Genetics also play a major role in a child being obese. If there is a history of obesity in a family, chances are the children will become obese themselves. In cases like this it is more important for parents to monitor closely the eating patterns and lifestyle of their children to prevent them from being obese.

These are the major causes for children being obese. It is important to remember and understand these causes so parents can closely monitor the lifestyle of their children and prevent them from being obese. It's important to have a more active role in the lives of our children, especially early in their development. It will be easier to build a healthy lifestyle early in their lives. A healthy lifestyle will lower risk of children to conditions such as high cholesterol, high blood and diabetes.

Is Soluble Fiber Better for Digestion?

Before we settle as to whether soluble fiber is superior or the insoluble fiber is, let's get a clear understanding about what they are. As the name suggests the soluble fiber is water-soluble. It dissolves completely in water. Whereas insoluble fiber doesn't dissolve in water. It is worth nothing that insoluble fibers in general have the characteristic of absorbing water. They don't dissolve in water, but they absorb water most of the time.

Is Soluble Fiber Better for Digestion?
Image: times.com

Even if you don't explicitly drink water along with your food consumption, there is plenty of water present in the food sources. When you eat foods containing soluble fiber, the fiber will dissolve in the water that is present in the stomach. It will either form liquid solution or it will form a gel or liquid paste. Some of the soluble fibers form very viscous gel. Viscous gel in the stomach causes stomach to empty slowly. The slow emptying stomach will make you feel full sooner.

This viscous gel also binds or traps nutrients and causes delays and interference in nutrient absorption in the small intestine. One can imagine, this may not bode well as it may potentially interfere with the absorption of vital nutrients like vitamins and minerals. Luckily it seems these types of fibrous gel doesn't hamper vital nutrient absorption. But it hampers bad cholesterol absorption up to certain extent. This means it helps reduce the blood cholesterol levels. The viscous gel also seems to bind and trap simple carbohydrates. This means it would interfere with digestion and absorption of simple sugars. This would help with controlling blood sugar and insulin levels. Although insoluble fiber doesn't dissolve in water, it also can form viscous substance. But most of the insoluble fiber doesn't form viscous gel. They rather swell in the presence of the water. So far the cholesterol lowering effects have only been attributed to the soluble fiber.

Another common characteristic of soluble fiber is the fermentability. Remember that neither soluble nor insoluble fiber is broken down by any of the digestive enzymes in the stomach or small intestine. This means the fiber reaches the colon pretty much intact. Bacteria in the colon seem to thrive on the soluble fiber gel entering the colon. When bacterial ferment the fiber, they produce simple gases like hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Along with the gases, they produce what is called short chain fatty acids. These fatty acids are absorbed through the colon wall into the blood stream.

It is not that the soluble fiber passes through the digestive tract without any caloric extraction. But we don't get full caloric content of these soluble fiber. First bacteria ferment them and consume the energy from these foods. Remaining energy is consumed by the human body when those fatty acids are absorbed. You can see soluble fibers have low caloric value in general. There is more than what meets the eyes. Those short chain fatty acids seem to be playing very important role in boosting the host immunity. They also seem to have a role in preventing the colon cancer. But the research in that area is still in its primary stages.

Although some of the insoluble fiber also seems to be fermented by the bacteria in the colon and offer those same benefits through short chain fatty acids. In general it is the soluble fibers which are mostly fermented. Majority of insoluble fiber just passes through the gastrointestinal tract pretty much intact. This means they have no caloric value. In theory you can eat a lot of food that are high insoluble fiber without seeing a direct caloric impact. Unfortunately the foods high in insoluble fibers are not the most palatable of the foods. Example of food high in insoluble fiber is wheat bran. Many people say that wheat bran tastes like paper.

Insoluble fibers have a tendency to swell up in the presence of water. This causes to give bulk to the food passing through the intestine. Enough bulk is important in stimulating intestinal muscular movement. This property of the insoluble fiber helps reduce constipation as it makes food move with enough speed through the intestinal tract. As you can see both types of fibers have their own benefits. Soluble fibers and some insoluble fibers which are more viscous have the benefit of reducing cholesterol levels and better regulating blood sugar levels. But they will contain some calories as the fermentation byproducts will eventually be absorbed in the colon.

The soluble fibers which are not viscous may not help with cholesterol reduction or blood sugar but will provide the immunity benefits and potential colon cancer benefits as long as they ferment in the colon. The insoluble fibers will not help with cholesterol, blood sugar or immunity but they will help with constipation. Besides they have no caloric value as they would pass through the digestive tract pretty much intact. Moreover in most of the natural food both types of fiber are present in varying degrees. One can choose supplements of specific type of fiber for specific benefits. Soluble fibers which are very viscous seems to have a larger number of benefits.

How to View Life Insurance As An Investment Tool

A lot of people have been approached about using life insurance as an investment tool. Do you believe that life insurance is an asset or a liability? I will discuss life insurance which I think is one of the best ways to protect your family. Do you buy term insurance or permanent insurance is the main question that people should consider?

How to View Life Insurance As An Investment Tool
Image: iii.org

Many people choose term insurance because it is the cheapest and provides the most coverage for a stated period of time such as 5, 10, 15, 20 or 30 years. People are living longer so term insurance may not always be the best investment for everyone. If a person selects the 30 year term option they have the longest period of coverage but that would not be the best for a person in their 20's because if a 25 year old selects the 30 year term policy then at age 55 the term would end. When the person who is 55 years old and is still in great health but still needs life insurance the cost of insurance for a 55 year old can get extremely expensive. Do you buy term and invest the difference? If you are a disciplined investor this could work for you but is it the best way to pass assets to your heirs tax free? If a person dies during the 30 year term period then the beneficiaries would get the face amount tax free. If your investments other than life insurance are passed to beneficiaries, in most cases, the investments will not pass tax free to the beneficiaries. Term insurance is considered temporary insurance and can be beneficial when a person is starting out life. Many term policies have a conversion to a permanent policy if the insured feels the need in the near future,

The next type of policy is whole life insurance. As the policy states it is good for your whole life usually until age 100. This type of policy is being phased out of many life insurance companies. The whole life insurance policy is called permanent life insurance because as long as the premiums are paid the insured will have life insurance until age 100. These policies are the highest priced life insurance policies but they have a guaranteed cash values. When the whole life policy accumulates over time it builds cash value that can be borrowed by the owner. The whole life policy can have substantial cash value after a period of 15 to 20 years and many investors have taken notice of this. After a period of time, (20 years usually), the life whole insurance policy can become paid up which means you now have insurance and don't have to pay anymore and the cash value continues to build. This is a unique part of the whole life policy that other types of insurance cannot be designed to perform. Life insurance should not be sold because of the cash value accumulation but in periods of extreme monetary needs you don't need to borrow from a third party because you can borrow from your life insurance policy in case of an emergency.

In the late 80's and 90's insurance companies sold products called universal life insurance policies which were supposed to provide life insurance for your whole life. The reality is that these types of insurance policies were poorly designed and many lapsed because as interest rates lowered the policies didn't perform well and clients were forced to send additional premiums or the policy lapsed. The universal life policies were a hybrid of term insurance and whole life insurance policies. Some of those policies were tied to the stock market and were called variable universal life insurance policies. My thoughts are variable policies should only be purchased by investors who have a high risk tolerance. When the stock market goes down the policy owner can lose big and be forced to send in additional premiums to cover the losses or your policy would lapse or terminate.

The design of the universal life policy has had a major change for the better in the current years. Universal life policies are permanent policy which range in ages as high as age 120. Many life insurance providers now sell mainly term and universal life policies. Universal life policies now have a target premium which has a guarantee as long as the premiums are paid the policy will not lapse. The newest form of universal life insurance is the indexed universal life policy which has performance tied to the S&P Index, Russell Index and the Dow Jones. In a down market you usually have no gain but you have no losses to the policy either. If the market is up you can have a gain but it is limited. If the index market takes a 30% loss then you have what we call the floor which is 0 which means you have no loss but there is no gain.

Some insurers will still give as much as 3% gain added to you policy even in a down market. If the market goes up 30% then you can share in the gain but you are capped so you may only get 6% of the gain and this will depend on the cap rate and the participation rate. The cap rate helps the insurer because they are taking a risk that if the market goes down the insured will not suffer and if the market goes up the insured can share in a percentage of the gains. Indexed universal life policies also have cash values which can be borrowed. The best way to look at the difference in cash values is to have your insurance agent show you illustrations so you can see what fits you investment profile. The index universal life policy has a design which is beneficial to the consumer and the insurer and can be a viable tool in your total investments.

5 Things to Do After a Hernia Surgery

For most people, the first time they look down at their midsection and see a hernia bulging through, it can be an odd sight - and more than just a little unsettling. It can also be confusing for those people for whom the hernia intermittently continues to pop in and pop out of sight, making the person second guess whether it's even really there at all.

5 Things to Do After a Hernia Surgery
Image: drstevenwilliams.com

After discovery, the first stage in the healing process is diagnosis by a doctor and then, for most, surgery. Hernia surgery has become a fairly routine procedure, and thousands of them are performed by surgeons around the world each year.

A hernia is essentially comprised of a tear in the muscle that makes up the wall of the abdomen or groin area. This tear allows part of the intestines underneath to poke through this tear in the muscle, appearing on the outside of the body as a bulge in the skin. A hernia can be painful, but just as often it is not painful at all. This leads some people to put off diagnosis and/or surgery. But, it is most wise to undergo surgery at your earliest convenience.

Surgery involves the surgeon creating a usually small incision near the area where the hernia has occurred. The surgeon then proceeds to insert some plastic mesh into the affected area, which serves to reinforce the weakened muscle area.

The prognosis for hernia surgery is almost always very good. There is little risk of complications such as infection, and success rates are very high. However, about 10% of hernia surgeries involve some sort of complication. It is important to know how to take the right steps after surgery in order to ensure a positive outcome.

If you have gone through hernia surgery recently or are scheduled to do so in the near future, there are a few things you should know in order to increase your chances of a smooth, worry-free recovery.

After a Hernia Surgery: 5 Things to Do

1. Avoid heavy lifting: For the first 6-8 weeks after surgery, be sure to avoid any heavy lifting or stretching movements that involve your placing your hands above your head. These types of activities can put a strain on the now-recovering incision and artificial mesh, in some cases causing the area to re-open or to not heal properly.

2. Do not avoid movement altogether, however: Some surgery patients take the "avoid heavy lifting" advice too far, however, choosing to stay in bed for days or weeks after surgery with very little movement. This is in fact a big no-no. In fact, light bodily movement on a regular basis is necessary as it helps the muscles around the repaired hernia build strength.

3. Keep an eye on weeping wounds: Your wound may leak or "weep" for a couple of days after surgery. However, this should soon end. If your wound continues to weep for more than 3-4 days, contact your doctor. You could have sustained an infection.

4. Eat high-protein foods: Your abdominal or groin muscles are in need of repair and healing. The speediest route to healing is to eat plenty of proteins such as those found in legumes, nuts, meats, and dairy products.

5. Watch for a recurrence: Some hernia patients see a recurrence of their hernia in a new place on the body. An even smaller percentage may see a recurrence at the actual site of their surgery. In either case, it is very important to immediately contact your doctor if you see a new bulge.

After hernia surgery, the steps you take will be important in ensuring a speedy recovery. Do these 5 things to improve your chances of a full, healthy recovery.

Hypertension In Pregnancy

ancy induced hypertension. Any degree of B.P with protein in urine is called Preeclampsia. And any B.P with fits is called eclampsia.

Since high BP in pregnancy causes symptoms late, the only way to detect this is by regular ante natal checkups. Women must get their B.P checked every month while they are pregnant. This is the only way to diagnose high blood pressure in pregnancy and save avoidable deaths.

Hypertension In Pregnancy

The presence of protein in urine and fits are ominous signs and treatment should be instituted immediately. In a patient with eclampsia, termination of pregnancy is the only option irrespective of the age and maturity of the child. In eclampsia, fits are controlled using magnesium injections.

The treatment of hypertension in pregnancy along with protein in urine depends on the severity of B.P and proteinuria. Severe raise in B.P should necessitate treatment with blood pressure lowering drugs. Many such drugs are harmful for the baby and hence such blood pressure lowering drugs should only be taken under medical supervision. There are many drugs which can be used for lowering blood pressure. Some of them include Methyldopa(Aldomet), Labetolol and hydralizine.

High blood pressure in pregnancy without any proteinuria or fits is managed conservatively. Women are admitted in a ward and advised absolute bed rest. High protein and low salt diet is advised. They may also be prescribed medicines to help them relax and sleep well.

There are other non pharmacological methods to prevent high blood pressure in pregnancy. Eating a well balanced, nutritious diet will reduces chances of high blood pressure in pregnancy. So does calcium supplementation. A pregnant lady should remain calm and composed at all times. Yoga and meditation lower stress and reduce B.P. Pregnant women must get at least 30 min of moderate physical activity (walking is the best exercise in pregnancy). This will have a beneficial effect on B.P.

No specific diet has been proven superior in preventing hypertension in pregnancy. However it's advisable to maintain salt intake at the appropriate levels required.

The key to prevent deaths due to hypertension in pregnancy is early diagnosis. It is important for pregnant women to understand the benefits of regular ante natal checkups and should follow the schedule carefully. Early diagnosis of high blood pressure in pregnancy will allow initiation of treatment and save precious lives.

What is a Hypertensive Crisis?

A dangerous spike in blood pressure is known as a hypertensive crisis that can lead to a stroke. Extreme high pressure of (top number) 180 systolic and (bottom number)120 diastolic or higher will damage arteries and capillaries. They will become inflamed and leak fluid and/or blood, rendering the heart unable to effectively pump blood under this condition.

What is a Hypertensive Crisis?
Image: buoyhealth.com

There are two types of hypertensive crisis. One is urgent and the other is an emergency. An urgent hypertensive crisis is when your blood pressure becomes dangerously high and your doctor doesn't suspect any damage to your organs. Symptoms and signs of an urgent hypertensive crisis may include, but not be limited to, shortness of breath, severe anxiety, severe headache, nose bleed and elevated blood pressure.

An emergency hypertensive crisis occurs when pressure becomes dangerously elevated and causes damage to your organs. Life threatening complications as a result of an emergency hypertensive crisis such as pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), heart attack, brain bleeding or swelling, stroke, aortic dissection (a tear in the heart's main artery) and eclampsia (high blood pressure with seizures if you are pregnant can occur. If you experience a severe increase in blood pressure, seek immediate medical treatment immediately. Treatment may include hospitalization with oral or intravenous (IV) medications.

To diagnose a hypertensive emergency the health care provider might ask you several questions to understand your medical history. They will also ask you what medications you are taking including prescription, nonprescription medications, recreational drugs and herbal or dietary supplements; a history of other co-morbid conditions and prior cardiovascular or renal disease. Tests will also be conducted to monitor blood pressure and assess organ damage including blood pressure monitoring, blood and urine test and pressure monitoring. Early emergency room triage is top priority to identify those patients who may require more aggressive care in the emergency room. Once a hypertensive emergency has been established the first order of business is to bring the pressure down with intravenous blood pressure medication to prevent further organ damage. Any organ damage that has already occurred will be treated with the appropriate medication and therapies.

Most hypertensive urgencies and emergencies are preventable. They are often the result of inadequately treated or untreated stage I or II hypertension or non adherence to hypertensive therapy. Hypertension affects roughly 50 million people in the United States each year. Hypertensive crisis affects close to 500,000 Americans each year. Approximately 30% of adults are unaware of their hypertension and 40% of the people with hypertension are not receiving treatment. Of those treated up to 67% do not have their blood pressure controlled to less than 140/90.

Hypertension develops at an early age and is more common and severs in African Americans compared to age matched non Hispanic whites. Hypertensive crisis is more common in African Americans compared with other races. The lifetime hypertension risk is 86 to 90% in females and 81 to 83% in men.

The best way to avoid hypertension and hypertensive crisis is to manage your blood pressure through exercise, healthy eating and proper medications when prescribed.

About Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Drugs

Over the last decade or so there have been some amazing developments in the treatment of chronic inflammatory and auto immune related diseases. A significant milestone in the treatment of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis, and other chronic inflammatory conditions is the development of Tumor Necrosis Factor or TNF Alpha inhibitors.

About Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha Drugs
Image: wikipidea.org

These medications fall into a new class of drugs called biologics and they have been extremely effective in treating the underlying cause of these cause of these conditions. TNF Alpha is a protein (more specifically a pro-inflammatory cytokine) that is produced when the immune system recognizes a threat to the body.

In cases such as auto immune related conditions, the body mistakes healthy cells as foreign "invading" cells and mistakenly sends these cytokines to destroy and eliminate otherwise healthy normal cells. Medical scientists are still trying to determine exactly why the body turns on itself and until there is an answer and solution these chronic diseases will continue to persist as incurable diseases.

What we have learned is that by binding or blocking the primary underlying causes of inflammation, in this case TNF Alpha, patients oftentimes experience subantial relief as well as possible remission of their conditions.

It is important to understand that biological TNF Inhibitors work by suppressing the immune system functions and by taking these medications a patient may be subjecting themselves to an increased risk of infections and opportunistic disease. It is also a very important consideration before starting a treatment plan that calls for anti-TNF medications is the financial cost of the medications. Patients should look into whether they can afford a treatment regimen with these medications and whether their insurance (if they have a plan) covers a significant portion of their prescription. It is estimated that a year of treatment can run into the $10,000 - $25,000 range.

Individuals that are concerned about starting a treatment plan that calls for TNF Inhibitors should speak with their physician. It is possible that a doctor may be able to recommend a nutritional plan that is designed to include medicinal foods or supplements that have been clinically demonstrated to inhibit TNF Alpha naturally. In this case the cost and potential for negative side effects are negligible.

TNF Arrest is a "first of its kind" nutraceutical supplement that is formulated and designed to infuse the most potent ingredients that have been clinically demonstrated to naturally inhibit Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha.

Cancer Immunotherapy Fighting The Cancers From Inside

The statistics are grim: one out of three people is expected to develop cancer in their lifetime; one in four cancer patients dies. To make matters worse, there are also more than two hundred different types of cancer, all asking for different treatment approaches. As of recently, there is a new hope for cancer patients - a potentially revolutionary new treatment: cancer immunotherapy.

Cancer Immunotherapy Fighting The Cancers From Inside
Image: Wikipedia.org

Science magazine's editors have named cancer immunotherapy as breakthrough of the year for 2013. Will we remember the past year as the one in which the new era in biotechnology has dawned? A triumph for scientists that presents a new hope for cancer patients? Quite possibly.

Immunotherapy uses the body's own immune system to fight disease. The most familiar form of immunotherapy is vaccination: when a weakened or dead virus responsible for the disease is injected into an organism, his immune system is prompted to produce antibodies and white blood cells that ward off infection from the live virus. How can this be used for treatment of tumors? The first approved therapeutic cancer vaccine uses patient's own tumor cells to spark an immune system attack on cancer.

Cancer immunotherapy differs from all the other forms of cancer treatment in that it doesn't target the cancer itself - it targets the patient's immune system. The goal is to stimulate the immune system so that it can destroy cancer by itself. There are two approaches to using immunotherapy for cancer. One technique uses antibodies that release a brake on T cells, making them attack tumors. The other technique uses T cells taken from a cancer patient, genetically modified to better target cancer.

The idea to use the body's own defense mechanism, the immune system, to combat tumors in nothing new. More than a hundred years ago, an American surgeon named William Coley tried an experiment: he injected cancer patients with bacteria in hopes of igniting an immune response. He observed that his method made the tumors shrink. Still, for decades, scientists have struggled to make it work.

Finally, in 2010, FDA approved the first therapeutic vaccine for prostate cancer, followed by the therapeutic vaccine for melanoma in 2011. For now, immunotherapy doesn't work for all cancer patients, and doctors cannot yet predict which ones will respond to the treatment. Still, when they do work, the response is often quick. Cancer immunotherapy is showing promise in treating the lung cancer, kidney cancer, melanoma, breast cancer, and head and neck tumors.

About Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment is one of the key concepts related to the study of cancer. Understanding the treatment for cancer is very important to treat the tumors with maximum reliability. This also helps in treating the tumors with least damage to the body of the victim and proves advantageous in minimizing the chances of redevelopment of tumor cells.

About Cancer Treatment

Understanding cancer treatment

Treatment for cancerous infections is very sensitive and should be taken in the right manner. Taking any unsuitable or unreliable treatment for cancer can be very risky and cause an irreversible damage to the body cells and tissues. Intensity and tenure of treatment for cancer depends on the character and growth of malignant tumors. Tumor cells can be controlled effectively if detected in time. Chances of curing these malignant cells decrease with an increase in the intensity of cancerous infection. Thus, thorough detection and diagnosis of cancer tumors is very important to plan out the right kind of treatment.

Treatment for cancer usually means the efforts taken for diagnosing and treating the abnormal cells. Main aim of the treatment is to kill the malignant cells and prevent them from further infecting the victim's body. When the cancerous cells invade healthy cells and tissues, such normal tissues and cells are forced to behave abnormally due to lack of vital resources like oxygen and blood. Such abnormal behavior can cause severe damage to some of the vital parts of the body if not controlled in time.

Hence, one of the major concerns of the treatment for cancer is to restrict the cancerous cells from metastasizing. It may use some of the harshest medical techniques to curb or kill such cells as their presence cannot be tolerated for too long. Another main purpose of the treatment is to restore strong immune system in the victim's body to make him more resistible to cancer attack in future. This also helps in gaining maximum benefits from the prescribed medication.

Dimensions of cancer treatment

Taking an apt treatment for cancer is very important to eliminate or curb the abnormal cell growth. Origin of the cancerous cells is the most important aspect in planning a proper treatment for cancer. Not all cancers metastasize at the same pace. Some cancers like the ones originating in the bones, head and neck areas, bloodstream, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes and breast grow at a faster pace as compared to other forms. Also, these forms of cancers contribute to the maximum cancer deaths worldwide and need a severe form of treatment.

Treatment for cancer also depends upon the nature of tumors. Tumors are usually benign or cancerous. Benign tumors are also termed as non-cancerous or pre-cancerous and are generally harmless to the human body. They do not kill or invade normal cells and tissues and restrict themselves to a particular region. They can be controlled easily because of their inability to metastasize. Also, some of the basic forms of treatments like surgery and regular medication are sufficient to control such tumors and they show very less chances to redevelop.

Cancerous tumors are the ones that are actually responsible for cancerous development in the body. These tumors damage the live cells and tissues very badly and do not allow them to function efficiently. Such cells become abnormal over a period of time and accumulate to form a lump or tumor. These cancerous tumors have high chances of recurrence and metastasize very rapidly. Such malignant tumors need a harsh form of treatment as compared to the benign ones and should be treated under thorough medical supervision.

Age, sex and personal or medical history of the disease also matters in prescribing a viable treatment for cancer. Personal habits and physical attributes also play a main role in undergoing cancer cure. Causes and symptoms may vary form person to person and primarily depend on the organ or the area in which the malignant tumors develop.

Cancer Treatment

Common cancer treatments

Treatments for cancer can be of various types and usually depends upon the cancer stage a person is suffering from.

Surgery is the most common and basic kind of treatment. It is very effective for treating benign tumors. It can also reliably treat the cancerous tumors formed in the initial or the first stage of cancer. Surgery is also recommended for treating tumors in the second and third stages of cancer but can be accompanied by some other treatments like chemical and radiation therapy.

Chemotherapy is another important kind of treatment to cure cancerous tumors. It is usually recommended if the cancer has reached an advanced stage. This treatment can also be prescribed in second and third stages of the disease and can be undertaken simultaneously with surgery.

Radiotherapy is the most advanced form of cancer treatment and is usually taken as the last resort for treating malignant tumors. It focuses more on killing the cells and destroying the infected areas instead of treating the tumors individually. Thus, this also leads to a severe damage to the cells and tissues adjacent to the infected areas and causes a permanent damage to the overall body-functioning.

Cancer treatments are usually severe and should be taken after considering the overall ability of the victim to tolerate such treatments. Treating cancer is a continuous process and depends mainly upon the response of cancer patient. The disease can be treated effectively if the patient responds well to the treatment and undergoes minimum side effects.

How To Look For Early Lung Cancer Symptoms

With an awareness of Lung Cancer rising amongst the western world population and many new initiatives been driven forward to reduce the risk of cancers as a whole, it is understandable that many people (whether they are, have been or haven't smoked) are increasingly worried about ailments and illnesses that may indicate a potential risk of this type of Cancer. Early Lung Cancer symptoms can manifest themselves in a variety of ways, so to the untrained eye, it is entirely possible to go unnoticed or even recognised as something else completely.

How To Look For Early Lung Cancer Symptoms
Image: Self.com

We know from medical advances that as with all types of cancer, Lung Cancer carries a much greater probability of a successful and speedy recovery if it caught and diagnosed at an early stage. This is why it is so crucial to be aware of the symptoms that are associated with first having developed the disease. Recent statistics have suggested that those sufferers who identify and seek appropriate treatment in the early stages, can look to have between 60-80% survivability rate, while the figures decrease drastically to approximately 10% for those who are diagnosed in the late stages. So with that in mind, the importance of identifying early lung cancer symptoms as soon as possible is crucial. Here's what you need to look for:

Coughing - While this is one of the primary signs of early lung cancer, it is in the same instance, a very common occurrence caused by a multitude of conditions from a simple cold, to an irritation, to an allergy, to more serious conditions such as lung cancer. For that very reason it's always worth keeping in mind that the presence of a cough does not automatically mean a cause for concern.

Shortness of breath or Lethargy - Another commonly occurring early symptom is a shortness of breath when undertaking activities that you would not have normally struggled with. Even normal household chores such as hoovering or window cleaning can leave early stage sufferers breathless and finding it difficult to get air. This can be exclusive or even coupled with a general feeling of lethargy. Tiredness throughout the day can be explained by a number of other factors such as age or physical activity but it is worth remembering that this is an early stage sign and one worth looking for.

Pains or aches throughout your upper torso - This is a symptom more specific to lung cancer and can help you to identify a problem early on. As lung cancers develop they can cause pain in nerves surrounding the affected areas. This can result in pains through your chest, back, shoulders or arms. It may, of course, be muscular in origin, but remember that if it does not subside in a day or two, it is worth approaching a medical professional with your concerns.

This article by no means covers the entire spectrum of early lung cancer symptoms but does give you an idea of some of the more common symptoms that may be present at the early stages of the disease. As with all health related concerns it's absolutely crucial to ensure any concerns are relayed to a qualified medical practitioner who can arrange for the necessary tests to be carried out for a proper diagnosis.

Health Insurance Providers - How to Choose a Provider

Health insurance is something that everyone needs but no one really wants to deal with. It isn't that they don't want insurance but rather there is an over abundance of options. There are literally hundreds of health insurance providers out there who are ready to sell you thousands of different plans. It can be a challenge sifting through them all and finding the best insurance company and health care plan for you and your family. If you are trying to cut through the confusion and get the right coverage for you, here are a few tips for choosing a good health insurance company.

Health Insurance Providers - How to Choose a Provider
Image:futurehealthcaretoday.com

The first step is to determine the type of health coverage you need as well as the type of health care plan you want. There are several kinds of insurance plans available and not every health insurance provider will offer them all. The most common plans are HMO and PPO. An HMO plan is one where you must have a primary care physician (PCP). The PCP acts as a gate keeper for medical services and you must obtain a referral from them in order to get care from a specialist. A PPO does not have this requirement. You can see any doctor you want on a PPO plan. However, these plans tend to be more expensive.

Once you've determined what type of plan you want, go to an online health insurance quote website to shop the different insurance companies and plans. The quote engine will bring up all the health insurance providers who are willing to extend you coverage as well as the premiums they are going to charge you. This provides a starting point for you to compare the companies with each other. Look at the plans they offer and compare the benefits of each plan to make sure you are getting a good value for what they are charging you.

Health Insurance for Unemployed

Unfortunately, most people have health insurance through their employers. While this is fantastic when you're working, there are times when you might get let go. Whether it's because you were fired, or because the company downsized, it doesn't make much of a difference when it comes to the loss of that particular benefit. There are, however, several programs available to help the unemployed out with health insurance for unemployed.

Options to Help You Get Health Insurance for Unemployed
Image:firstquotehealth.com

When you're employed, it's possible that you had to pay out a certain amount to help pay for the cost of your health insurance for unemployed.
There could be hope yet, though, under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) which was passed by Congress in 1986. Under this act, the government provided the possibility for unemployed persons, whether their position was terminated voluntarily or involuntarily or if your hours were reduced far enough for the company to cut your health benefits, to keep the group health plan you enjoyed at your job at the same rates. Under the act, the affected employees spouse and dependent children who were covered by the policy continue to be covered.

The downside to COBRA is that, without the employer or former employer paying the greater portion of the policy is that the unemployed person would then have to pay the full premiums. This isn't always affordable. President Obama signed an economic stimulus package shortly after he came into office to help those who fell under the umbrella of COBRA. Anyone who became unemployed from September 1, 2008 - December 31, 2009 can take advantage of COBRA and only pay 35% of the full premiums for up to 9 months. The unemployed person will receive notice from their former employer advising them they are eligible for COBRA and this will come with information on how to take advantage of the subsidy.

Even with the reduced premiums available to some under the new COBRA rules, there are still some people that will not be able to afford the premiums. When this occurs, it's time to take advantage of government programs, insurance company programs, and private corporation programs. If you need to take a certain prescription medication, you can even directly contact the manufacturer to see if they can help you get into contact with these agencies - they may even have an option of their own to help you out. If you need to, contact the department of insurance for your state. They will have most information to help you get started readily available.

COBRA, policy conversion, and state insurance continuation will not help the unemployed person with their health insurance for unemployed if their former employer didn't provide them with any in the first place. Check out your eligibility in this case for Medicaid, Medicare, and state-sponsored health care options. If you have some money to spend on insurance, then contact the state's insurance department to ask them about health insurance for unemployed options that are more affordable.

Health Insurance For College Students

Many students face the same problems every year with getting health insurance. I was one of them. My parents had me covered in their HMO plan, but when I decided to go to college outside of the state (I moved to California), my coverage got canceled because I moved outside of the network area. So there I was looking for health insurance and thinking that there had to be a cheaper way of getting health insurance for college student, without having to buy an expensive individual policy.

Health Insurance For College Students
Image:udemy.blog

There actually are plenty of options if you know where to look. Below I will let you in on the easiest ways to get insured:

Group Health Insurance

You probably know already that companies offer health insurance at much better rates than you can get as an individual. This is because the insurance company gives discounts in return for getting more customers. As a student you may not have a lot of time to work or maybe you do. In any case getting group insurance from a job is a good way of getting coverage while earning money. But make sure you check who qualifies for insurance before you sign the contract.

College Insurance

If you are considering leaving state, then it's worth checking if the college of your choice offers some kind of health care for college student. Most large universities do.

Join an organization

While organizations such as fraternities, sports clubs, churches etc. can not get group health rates, they can still get association rates which are lower than individual rates. This is something to consider for you. All cities, especially those with a college, have some kind of organizations and volunteering available. Check if one of them offers cheap student health insurance.

Medicaid

If you are really broke, you may consider checking if you qualify for Medicaid. Medicaid is a government sponsored health care system, but your income has to be below a certain level for you to qualify.

Are Weight Loss Shakes A Healthy Way To Lose Weight?

But Are Weight Loss Shakes A Healthy Way To Lose Weight?

These meal replacements come in two basic forms:

A pre-packaged beverage in a bottle or can
A powder mixed with milk or water
Some shakes offer a variety of flavors and others have a small selection of base flavors and suggest that you add fruit or other condiments to taste. Sometimes they are called protein shakes.

A shake is an efficient delivery system for targeted nutrition. Weight lifters and body builders use protein shakes to deliver replenishing and building nutrients to muscles. These kinds of shakes are not meal replacements, they are targeted nutrition for a specific purpose.

Protein shakes have become a popular over the counter diet product because protein stabilizes blood sugar levels, which curbs cravings for carbohydrates. They satisfy hunger so that fewer calories are consumed, promoting weight reduction. They lack the nutrition profile needed for complete wellness.

A shake is only a healthy way to lose weight when it offers complete nutrition, including a healthy balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats along with vitamins, essential trace elements and fiber.

Lifestyle Considerations

Drawbacks of using weight loss shakes include inconvenience of preparation and being the 'odd man out' in communal dining situations.

Most high quality meal replacement shakes come in powder form that requires mixing in milk or water. In its most basic form it is mixed in a simple shaker cup. If you want to dress your shake up with added fruit or crushed ice a blender is required. These are small obstacles and easily overcome if you have chosen to use shakes to reach your weight loss goal.

You may feel self-conscious sitting with the lunch group drinking your shake while your friends chow down on fast food. Almost 70% of Americans are overweight or obese and your discomfort will quickly be replaced by confidence when your results become obvious.

Advantages Of Weight Loss Shakes

The advantage of a quality weight loss shake is that it delivers a complete nutrition in a very small calorie count. In most cases a complete, satisfying meal is assembled well under 300 calories and in most cases it will be around 200 calories.

By replacing two meals a day with quality shakes overall nutrition increases while calorie count, especially for meals often filled by fast food options, is greatly reduced. With the right balance of nutrients, a weight loss shake is satisfying and delivers far more complete nutrition than is obtainable without eating several times a many calories.

Are Weight Loss Shakes A Healthy Way To Lose Weight?

Yes. A quality meal replacement shake is a great way to lose weight as part of a balanced and sensible meal plan. Shakes are also a great way to support ideal weight and support complete nutrition for a busy and active lifestyle.

Basic Aspects of Health Insurance Exchange

Health insurance Exchange is one of the major aspects of The Patient Protection and the Affordable Care Act. These Exchanges are however not just an online platform for insurance plan transactions nor a mere listing of the insurance companies operating in the state. These Exchanges are governed by certain guidelines, need to mandatorily perform certain functions and must have certain features that will be common across the States.

Basic Aspects of Health Insurance Exchange
Image:amppob.com

Shopping Arena:
The Exchange will function as an expansive online health insurance marketplace where residents can window shop and compare plans and finally purchase a policy that suits their medical needs and financial budget completely.

State Owned:
Though the Exchange will be funded by federal dollars, it will be governed by state authorities. Though the health reforms propagate that each state must have its own Exchange, it has also left for a Regional Exchange that will cater to a group of states. A regional Exchange will be cost effective and will be able to tap a bigger market, thus ensuring more competitive rates.

Low Cost Insurance:
The Act makes it all compulsory that all participating companies will exhibit their cheapest plan on the states. Also, the intense competition between the companies will lead to price war which will finally lead to residents accessing policies at the most competitive rates. Apart from the price war, the Exchange will also house sponsored health programs like CHIP, Medicaid and Medicaid. So, if a resident wants to purchase the cheapest plan, he will not have to look beyond the health Exchange.

Not Government Insurance
The Exchange is not a government insured health program. It is only an online platform, built with the government money and guided by government guidelines, that allows health insurance company, private or otherwise, to display their products on the Exchange.

Will not replace company sponsored plans
The Exchanges are not an alternative to getting coverage at work. Employer sponsored insurance will still remain one of the cheapest way to access health insurance. In fact, the Exchange will have a special segment for group coverage. Known as SHOP (Small Business Health Option Plan), this sub platform is meant for small business firms who are looking to purchase health insurance on behalf of their employees.

Not a way to curb premium rates
The main idea behind setting up an Exchange is to bring in more regulations in the insurance market place. Cheaper health plans are only a by-product of a perfectly built health Exchange. Otherwise, as the residents of Massachusetts have discovered from their experience with the Connector, the Exchange could end up going the cable TV way, with rising prices and limited choices.

Effectiveness of Diet Supplements

What are diet supplements?

The weight loss business is booming in the United States. Each year, consumers spend billions on books, videos, gym memberships, and diet supplements. So how do we know what is effective and what is just a short-lived trend? While there is no substitute for a healthy diet and regular exercise, some diet supplements will actually aid in weight loss if used correctly.

Effectiveness of Diet Supplements

How do they work?

Most weight loss supplements are designed to increase the body's natural ability to lose weight. In a very broad sense, this is essentially done by speeding up a person's metabolism. Metabolism is the action a body takes to process calories and nutrients and turn them into energy. When this process is more efficient, the body is able to lose weight more quickly. In addition to increasing metabolic rate, many weight loss supplements are designed to replace nutrients the body needs but may not be receiving while dieting.

What is in them?

There are regulations in place to govern the claims and ingredients that go along with weight loss supplements, although none of these regulations are enlisted to measure the effectiveness of the supplement in promoting weight loss. Regulation is generally in place to protect consumers from harmful substances and to ensure that a supplement does actually contain the ingredients that are advertised by the manufacturer. It is important to look for a weight loss supplement that contains only natural ingredients.

Who should take them?

Diet supplements can be used by most anyone that is trying to lose weight. Some precautions should be taken by persons with certain medical conditions or women that are pregnant. For pregnant women, there are a host of other supplements on the market that contain vitamins and other nutrients that can be beneficial during pregnancy. If there is uncertainty, it is best to learn more about the specific supplements and even consult a physician.

How do I choose the right one?

If you are planning to exercise and observe a reduced calorie diet, it is wise to choose a weight loss supplement that includes some essential trace minerals. Often when reducing caloric intake, a dieter is also reducing the amount of nutrients needed by the body for proper function which can be counter-productive to losing weight. These nutrients should support enzyme and organ functions as well as aid in digestion. Natural appetite suppressants are also a good attribute when selecting a weight loss supplement. There are many natural ingredients that are known to serve this purpose. A reduced calorie diet may take a toll on the body's energy levels and so some supplements will contain caffeine or other natural stimulants that are great for boosting energy -- just be careful to limit or eliminate caffeine from the rest of your diet so as not to take in too much. As a bonus, some diet supplements may contain ingredients that are known to reduce stress. Dieting can be stressful to some and these natural stress relievers may be just what one needs to ensure success with losing weight.

Diet supplements can be a great way to replace nutrients while dieting and speed up the metabolic process to turbo charge weight loss. To be safe, only purchase diet supplements that contain natural ingredients and are made by a well-known brand that has been around for some time.

Will Texas Health Insurance Increase With The Medical Loss Ratio Mandate?

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was created by the Obama administration to improve the health care system in the United States. More specifically, it aims to reduce the number of people going without any form of health care coverage. One of the controversial mandates of the new health care reform law is the Medical Loss Ratio (MLR).

Will Texas Health Insurance Increase With The Medical Loss Ratio Mandate?

What Is The Medical Loss Ratio All About?

Medical loss ratio is the percentage of premium dollars spent on medical care and healthcare quality improvements versus administrative costs. Under the medical loss ratio mandate of the health care reform law, starting 2011, all insurance companies are required to maintain a MLR of 80 percent for small group and individual health insurance plans and 85 percent for large group plans. The remaining percentage should be spent on administrative costs. If an insurance company could not comply with this mandate, they would be required to issue rebates to their plan holders by 2012.

Texas Filed A Waiver For The Implementation Of The MLR

States are allowed to file a waiver to the secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius if they think the MLR requirements would pose a risk of destabilizing their insurance market. It would be the decision of the secretary of HHS if she would grant the state a waiver or not.

Since the passage of the health care reform law, the HHS has received 15 requests for exemption from the MLR mandate. Texas was one of the states who submitted a request regarding the medical loss ratio requirements for the individual and small group Texas health insurance plans. Texas Department of Insurance believes that the mandate will disrupt their state's individual and small group insurance plans.

Currently, out of the 15 states who filed waiver requests, only one was fully approved. Five requests were granted limited approval and six were rejected right then and there. As for Texas and two other states, their fate still lies in the hand of HHS because they are waiting for the decision.

How Will The MLR Mandate Affect Texas Health Insurance Premiums?

According to Spencer Harris, Texas health care policy analyst, the MLR mandate can be damaging because it interferes with the way insurance companies run their business. Instead of the main purpose of lowering premiums so people can afford getting healthcare, it might have the opposite effect.

The medical loss ratio mandate might even raise Texas healthcare coverage premiums. This would force a lot of insurers to stop doing business or leave the state. If this happens, competition among insurers will be limited driving up the prices of healthcare coverage.

While waiting to see the changes to Texas health insurance, why not take a closer look at your health care spending? There are plenty of things that you can do to lower your health insurance premiums without compromising the quality of healthcare that you receive. You can get a high-deductible Texas health insurance plan to get lower premiums. You may also consider pairing it up with an HSA to enjoy tax-free benefits.

Is Belly Fat Surgery What You Need?

For a lot of people who have tried just about every diet plan in the world, exercise regularly and do everything suggested to shed those unwanted lbs., and still can't lose weight, surgery might be the last and only option left. In fact, thousands of people each year are getting these procedures done. Yes, it's a cosmetic type surgery, but on the other hand, it could be a life-saving one. The reverse side of the coin is giving up and being obese and unhealthy, or worse dying a premature death.

Is Belly Fat Surgery What You Need?

So what exactly is this surgery and what does it accomplish?

A rubber band type of device (called a lap band) is inserted and surrounds part of the stomach, effectively making it much smaller. And obviously if you have a smaller stomach, it's going to take far less food to get a full feeling. You eat less, you get full quickly, hence you start to lose weight, assuming you are active enough to burn more calories than you have coming in.

There is also a procedure that is more well known, called liposuction. The surgeon will cut into the stomach area and will use a device that literally vacuums out the fat. This is good for targeting problem areas, and the results are immediate. You go in with belly fat and you leave without it. It's that simple.

As with any type of surgical procedure there are risks involved. People have complications such as infection or reactions to anesthesia may arise. The risks are generally low however, and for most patients the rewards of a slimmer body far outweigh it. Another consideration is that in most cases, fat reduction is considered elective surgery and more than likely will not be covered by your insurance policy, unless of course it's considered as a life threatening situation.

Most liposuction and lap band surgery can be financed however, even by the clinic doing the procedure. So, if you have tried everything else and that stubborn belly fat just will not go away, belly fat surgery might be just what the doctor recommends so you can finally have the body you have been wanting.
